All about diabetes
Many studies have proven that balancing the suger level in the blood, good blood pressure, low cholesterol and right body weight are reducing the risk for:
heart disease, renal failure, stroke, damage to the nervous system and blood vessels, serious wounds that may lead to limb amputation, vision disruption and even blindness.
Burning glucose molecules
In order to survive our body needs energy.
This energy is produced by burning glucose molecules in our cells.
The glucose comes from the food we eat during the day.
Our digestion system observes the glucose from the food and the blood deliver it to the body.
In cases of excess glucose (after the meal), our body will use the required energy, the rest will be stored.
Glucose molecules are stored in different organs as the liver, kidneys and even muscles (but less).
The glucose is stored as glycogen.
Glycogen
Glycogen is the available source of glucose.
It can supply the body energy without food as we fest or sleep.
Pancreas’s main functions
The pancreas is an organ located behind/under the stomach.
It has two main functions:
First is to produce enzymes for the digestive system.
Their function is to dismantle the basic components of food.
The second is to create hormones as insulin which keeps the right level glucose, fat and protein in our body.
What is insulin?
Insulin is an hormone with a very important rule in regulating the glucose in our body.
The insulin is responsible for the glucose entry into the cells and as well takes parts in breaking down the glycogen when glucose is not available.
Insulin is the main hormone in controlling the glucose, proteins and fats in the body.
Regular presence of insulin in the body is always necessary.
Insulin level may raise and fall subject to the body needs (metabolism) on the current moment.
Main types of diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes:
On the first type, the pancreas is not producing insulin at all, it should be supplied to the body by injecting or using a special pump.
The second type is different – there the pancreas keeps producing insulin in reaction to the blood glucose levels, but the process is not working properly.
There is over production of insulin and the glucose level in the blood is decreasing rapidly.
